Fleeting Memories

As an amateur photographer, why are there so few pictures of my daughter? The simple answer is time.

The life of a photographer, life behind the lens is disconnected from reality. On its foundation are the technicality of camera setup, lens choice, and other second-nature decisions. Then it dissects situations; it creates potential realities to prepare for the future. During the event, it draws on preparation and experience to be at the right place at the right time, then fall back on basics when everything goes to hell (because everything that can go wrong will go wrong). After each event, it spends vast amounts of energy to cull down to a single product that reflects the story. And finally, even more energy is required to process the raw selections into a polished presentation.

Most times I'd rather just hold my daughter's hand as she walks me around the department store, or push her on the swing, or do my best to comfort and distract her when she's crying because she's hungry or sleepy.

Thankfully, I'm not a videographer! ...yet.

  1. I'm an uncle and I see that as my role: photographer of the kids.
